Why do I need my own Domain name?

A Domain name is the name by which you or your company choose to be known on the Internet.
This name, when registered is unique to you. It is recognised globally and cannot be used by anyone else in the world.

The most important feature with your web site is your own Domain name. You can carry out a world wide search on your preferred Domain name on the Centrick Website, and as long as this name is not already taken, Centrick Ltd will register your chosen Domain name.

What is the difference between a Domain name, an e-mail address and a web site?

The examples opposite illustrate the differences for both personal and business users.

Personal user example:

Mr Ian Smith

Name

Smith.co.uk

Domain Name

ian@smith.co.uk

e-mail Address

www.smith.co.uk

Web Site Address

Business user example:

Smith Garages Ltd  Company Name
smithgarages.co.uk  Domain Name
www.smithgarages.co.uk  Web Site Address
ian@smithgarages.co.uk  1st e-mail Address
sales@smithgarages.co.uk  2nd e-mail
 Address
service@smithgarages.co.uk  3rd e-mail Address
 + more if required

If Mr Ian Smith was connected to the Internet via an ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as Freeserve, for example, then his e-mail address would be:

ian@smith.freeserve.co.uk

This address advertises his ISP, Freeserve, every time he sends an e-mail or gives out his e-mail address. It also advertises that Mr Ian Smith does not have his own Domain name or a web site. As a businessman, he and his company would clearly benefit from his own Domain name and web site address as in the example of Smith Garages

Mr Smith decides that he wishes to portray a professional Internet presence for his company and wants to advertise his company whenever he or any of his staff send an e-mail.

Mr Smith also wishes to advertise his own company web site to allow his customers to become fully aware of all the services and products that his company has to offer. Customers are able to keep up to date with new services and products, pay on-line, make appointments and correspond with his company 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Why should you and your company have your own Domain name?

There are many reasons, apart from the above, why registering your own Domain name is important. Firstly, for using e-mail and all the advantages e-mail has over conventional mail. Between the millions of computer networks world wide, the largest use of the Internet is e-mail. It is by far the easiest, most convenient and cheapest method of sending mail - whether messages are sent across the world or across the street, the cost is the same - the price of a local telephone call and is instantly transferred from your computer to its destination.

Although all ISP’s provide you with an e-mail address on connection to the Internet, this address is personal and says nothing about your company, is not very memorable, advertises their service rather than yours and portrays an image that your company is either very small or under invested in modern IT (Information Technology) or lagging behind in modern business practices.

In cases where you rely on your ISP e-mail address for business and personal use, changing your ISP normally means having to change your e-mail address as well, and this may involve amending company letterheads, business cards and detaching any company identity you have built up.

For example, you register the domain name www.smithgarages.co.uk and your present ISP is Freeserve and your e-mail address is ian.smith@freeserve.net. Your web hosting / design company should offer you the facility of a mail box so you can send and receive e-mail using your domain name, so you choose info@smithgarages.co.uk. All e-mails sent to info@smithgarages go to your mail box and sit and wait to be picked up. All you need to pick up this mail is a connection to the Internet, this can be provided by any dial up ISP like Freeserve, Virgin, BT Click and changed whenever you like, you go online to get to your mail box and check it for mail.

With your own Domain name, your address can stay for life, remaining the same regardless of which ISP you use. With the introduction of Internet mobile phones, individuals will soon be giving out their e-mail addresses rather than their telephone numbers. Anyone can see just how important and attractive a personal portable name for life really is and it will soon be an absolute business necessity, like a telephone or fax number is at the present moment in time.

Secondly, you may want to use the name of your company, organisation, club or family name, products or brands as a web site address.
With the growth of the Internet trade doubling every 100 days it is very important that the name you prefer is yours for life.
At the present moment there are 30,000 names being registered per day. Since there are no restrictions on who can register a name someone with a similar name to yours may have taken the exact Domain name you want. You can register today with Centrick Ltd using our on-line registration form, before its too late.

Finally, you now have the option of e-mail and multiple e-mail forwarding through your Domain name. Once a Domain name is registered, i.e. www.smithgarages.co.uk, you can choose to have e-mails to this address forwarded on to an e-mail address at home or another location:

For example, an e-mail is sent to trevor@smithgarages.co.uk and arrives at your mail box on your hosting server, but you want Trevor's e-mails to be sent straight to his home computer, so the server is programmed to redirect these e-mails on to Trevors' private e-mail address at home.

You can also give specific e-mail addresses to any number of people or departments through your Domain name, and have all incoming mail forwarded onto your preferred destinations, either a single e-mail address or individual e-mail addresses:

For example three e-mails are sent to service@smithgarages.co.uk, sales@smithgarages.co.uk and rachel@smithgarages.co.uk, these are all redirected and sent to the right departments/relevant people. As long as each department/person has a computer with Internet access, you can automatically manage your e-mails in this way.

Many companies now choose to register several Domain names

In some instances there may be advantages in multiple Domain name registration, including protecting product/brand names and more often to enable the company to attract attention to different facets of a business, though still marketing them together within one web site.

If the name of your company can not hope to attract all your target markets, contemplate registering several names which will attract the right audiences but all direct to the same website. Each facet of your business can be represented on various pages of your website yet be marketed independently on search engines and advertising. An example of this could be Frameprints.com, Pictureframes.com, RestoringPictures.co.uk all arriving at the same web site with seperate pages for each department. However remember that each Domain name has to be registered individually and the registration fee's paid. Another case of multiple Domain name registration would be to stop another company from using a name like yours. An example like this could be Pentop.com, Pentop.co.uk, Pentop.net, Pentop.ltd.uk.
